A question for Christians.?

My question is how can we read these verses and say, "That is just the old custom of the church and we do not have to do them any more."

Deuteronomy 22:5

A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this.

1 Corinthians 11:13-16

Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.

***But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.***

But as you can see Paul said this is not a custom of the church. It was done to set us apart from the world.

I am Pentecostal so I believe this is the way it should be, but I just want to know what others think.

A question for Christians.?

Majestic One - great answer!!!

From the rest, I'm just curious who gets to pick and choose which of the rules in the bible are meant to be followed now and which are okay to be thrown aside??

A question for Christians.?

god lives within my heart and I don't need a book, written by men, to tell me that

A question for Christians.?

Clothes aren't important to God.

These guidlines were written for a different time.

Nothing bad will happen if they aren't followed.

THEY don't save a person-Jesus does!

A question for Christians.?

Yes, and in 1 Corinthians, it then goes on to say that each of us is supposed to judge for ourselves. In other words, DON'T BE LEGALISTIC.

Personally, I don't think it matters. Once we were under the Law. Now we're under Grace.

A question for Christians.?

Thou shalt not kill. People don't follow that one either. I guess that's an old church custom too?

A question for Christians.?

that stuff doesnt really matter. god word isn't soley in a book written by sexist men 2000 years ago. just be a good person and don't be so anal.

A question for Christians.?

my thinking..is that as long as you believe, honor, and glorify the lord, he's looking at your heart, and that you worship him. not the way you worship.

but there is something to be said for the old customs i suppose.

A question for Christians.?

If you are really serious about the bible and believe every word is true, then you follow what it is saying? It doesn't seem right to just pick and choose what is important and what is not?

A question for Christians.?

I think that the bible has good points, but should not be taken so seriously, things change over thousands of years, and so has the bible, belive it or not.

So I just think that you should row your own boat. because if you know where you want to go, and you let someone else row for you, you probably will end up at the wrong place!

A question for Christians.?

I have found that we must either accept all that the Bible says, and we must not decide what we should believe and what we should change to fit our society.

We should take it all on Faith.

All of it!

If things are different in our modern society, I think that it means that our society is in the wrong....not that the Bible is out of date. It has been a beacon of light in a dark world for many centuries. The world has changed, but the Bible has not.because it is God's Holy word.

A question for Christians.?

The Bible is a great book that teaches the history and customs of the Jewish people of 4,000 years ago.

I am neither Jewish nor do I live 4,000 years ago, so I don't need a book to tell me what I should and should not do. I follow the Golden Rule, treat everyone with respect, follow the laws of my state and country and do the best I can to make it in this society without being a prick.

A question for Christians.?

Jesus was the fulfilment of the law, apart from the new testament, the 600 some odd laws need to be placed in the proper context. God was preparing a group of people to recieve himself (Jesus) so it was of utmost importance to make the way straight, so to speak. As for the corinthians passage, it reads to me like a throwback to the garden of eden. Where eve disobeyed God and caused man to fall. And that shame is naturally her covering, which is made manifest by long hair. It seems to me (pop pychology) that men with long hair look weak and feminine, while women look dikish with short hair, disturbing the natural homologous order of appearance. Notice that nowhere in the verse are they condeming the length of hair by the power of God, so we must assume that there is no sin attached to hairstyle. ;p

A question for Christians.?

Deuteronomy 22:5 is talking about homosexuality not clothe wearing, get the subject and read on.

Keep in mind that at the time of Deuteronomy 22:5 men wore skirts.

1 Corinthians 11:13-16 is talking about the return of the fallen angels. They are going to be after women as it was in the time of Noah. for a woman to keep her head covered means to keep the truth of God in her mind. But for a man to have long hair it would be a disgrace for the fallen angels will be after them also.

think about it.

A question for Christians.?

Maybe you could help me out with these questions:

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws (Lev. 20:14)?

A question for Christians.?

Let's start with the hair

In 1 Cor 11, it talks about long hair, but it does not say we can't cut it. My hair is shoulder length - it is long.

Now let's look at Deuteronomoy 22 - I can guarentee that in no way do most of us dress like men, most of us - even wearing jeans and T-shirts, do not try to pass ourselves off as men and look pretty darn girly. Back when that was written NO ONE wore pants.

A question for Christians.?

Deuteronomy 22:5, when properly translated, has to do with a woman taking a man's place in a sexual relationship, not with clothes.

A question for Christians.?

Paul was confused on a number of points.

His was a patriarchal mentality, in an age when women were considered nothing but property. He was raised in a tradition in which Yahweh saw nothing wrong in a father selling his daughter into slavery. Or burning alive the daughter of a priest who lost her virginity. He came from a culture where women were not even thought important enough to COUNT as members of the Israelite tribes.

What sets people apart from the world is their actions NOT THEIR APPEARANCE.

Was Samson dishonored for wearing his hair long???? Is a woman dishonored if she cuts her hair???? Or when she loses it due to cancer???? If her hair was given to her 'for a covering' WHY does not God make sure she keeps it, despite her illness....does he want her to be dishonored????

Is Laura Bush dishonored every time she wears a pant's suit, or jeans???? Was Joan of Arc dishonored by wearing men's armour???

Not trying to be smart...just trying to make sense of some of Paul's silliness.

A question for Christians.?

ok in deu you don't do that and in cor. Jesus is the head of the woman. and she don't need to cover her head . there were woman that went with Jesus every were he went and who did Jesus tell to go tell the rest a woman. he told mary to tell peter and them he is alive. and paul also said to them what the word of God come to you only. yes it comes to woman to. God uses us to.

A question for Christians.?

When I first read your question, I shuddered as I thought about the cross-dressing in today's society that has been less shocking to many people today.

After Jesus made the supreme sacrifice, it appears that many of the old laws were not held as high or as important.

I can see why it was done, to show the reverence of the God-fearing man and woman. You also mentioned 1 Corinthians 11:13 where says to judge among yourselves.

My close neighborhood friend growing up was raised Pentecostal and, I, Baptist. We got along wonderfully well. Her mother finally made her a special skirt for horse-back riding with me. It was fun. We grew up and she moved away. (She died a few years back, of cancer.) My good friend never said a word about my hair cuts. They loved us just the same.

That is a good example of the love of Jesus.

We loved them, in spite of our differences, as they loved us.

A question for Christians.?

thats where the difference between christianiy and islam come in. pants, while being primarily being a mans clothes, can also be cut into a woman's style (such as capris or whatever) people all used to wear robes back then anyway. and besides, samson had long hair and god gave him power until his hair was cut. so mixed signals maybe? i know there is a lot of information missiong from the bible due to the dead sea scrolls gone missing (supposedly mohhamed found them and his wife burned them for heat) and i know the catholic church used to (like a thousand years ago, to make sure we're clear. i dont want to offend anyone) censor the bible of things they felt that the people didnt need to know.

A question for Christians.?

I think what you are struggling with is the letter of the law verses the spirit of the law.

The letter of the law is very strict--if it even appears slightly like men's clothing--a woman should never wear it-whether or not she believes it is wrong or not.

Of course a woman should dress modestly and the style she chooses should be feminine and not masculine in design since many cross-dressers and homosexuals are confusing the gender issues and violating God's established roles of male and female.

The spirit of the law is this--how we dress should show our heart attitude. A person could easily always dress appropriately yet not being doing so because of a desire to live righteously and please God but simply because it is the LAW.

Are we doing such a thing to show from our hearts how much we love God? How we honor our role as designed by God and show a good example for others who do not believe?

The way we dress should honor God from the heart.

Short, revealing, sexy and/or masculine clothing on a female are not glorifying God or respecting our station in life as a sister in the LORD.

We also must remember that this is something which is a personal conviction--that over time as a woman matures in her faith she WILL begin to dress appropriately (if she is not) and that we need to walk in grace and mercy towards those who do not yet have this conviction from the LORD in their heart.

Let's try our best not to major on minors. There are so many more serious and even criminal sins that are harming the body of Christ that this is simply something that God will take care of in the individual believer's life as He sees fit.
